ABOUT BE A PART OF ELIMINATING HEPATITIS C IN THE UK

THE HEPATITIS C TRUST

Hepatitis C has been killing people at an ever increasing rate over the last 20 years but we now have amazing drugs that can cure 95% or more of those that take them. The treatment is easy to take and only lasts between 8 and 12 weeks. That means we can not only stop people dying, we can really eliminate it from the UK and make hepatitis C history. If we make sure people can access the drugs.

When the drugs first appeared there were claims that they were unaffordably expensive, even though NICE said they were cost-effective. However, they now cost about ¼ of what they did 2 years ago so that is no longer an issue.

The issue has now become diagnosing those who have never been tested and re-finding those who have been diagnosed in the past but have now been lost to services. There are about 100,000 of them in the UK living with this virus that can cause liver failure and liver cancer. If we can find these people, we can cure them and eliminate hepatitis C. If we don’t, significant numbers of people will keep on dying, turning up in services only when it is too late and they already have cirrhosis or liver cancer that is too advanced to treat - and elimination will remain forever just a dream.

That is where we need your help.

We are already running a series of projects to reach people at high risk:

We run a testing van that can go anywhere and reach some of the most vulnerable

We have peer testing projects in drug services

We have peer testing and support projects in London prisons

We are hoping to start a testing and support project in women’s prisons across the country

We are about to start a project in communities who come from countries where hepatitis C is endemic because of unsafe healthcare.

All of these need funding but they directly save lives.

The Hepatitis C Trust is the national UK charity for hepatitis C. It was founded and is now led and run by people with personal experience of hepatitis C and almost all of our Board, staff and volunteers either have hepatitis C or have had it and cleared it after treatment.

Historically, hepatitis C has been neglected, partly because there has been no concerted patient voice. People with hepatitis C have typically kept quiet because it is infectious and because it has been wrongly stigmatised as ‘a drug users’ disease’.

The Trust is committed to changing this, by:

• raising public awareness that this is a virus that can be contracted in many ways

• ending discrimination against people living with hepatitis C

• creating an active community of patients willing to stand up and be heard

• providing information, support and representation for people with hepatitis C

The Trust’s mission

Our mission is to reverse the rapidly increasing death toll caused by hepatitis C in the UK until no-one dies from this preventable and treatable disease and, ultimately, it is all but eliminated in the United Kingdom.

To achieve this we run a range of projects and services that fall broadly into five areas:

• Awareness raising

• Research

We also firmly believe in the principle of patient-centred medicine and are committed to continually increasing the employment opportunities at the Trust for people with hepatitis C, both as paid staff and as volunteers.
